Instagram Reels

In response to the rise in TikTok usage among Gen Z and Millennials, social media giant Facebook (who owns Instagram) has a plan for how they will combat the rising competition. According to Tech Crunch, Instagram has confirmed that they will release the stories feature Reels into the U.S as early as August 2020.

“The U.S. launch comes shortly after Reels’ arrival in India this month, following a ban of TikTok in that market. Reels has also been tested in Brazil, France, and Germany.”

Instagram Attempts to Stay Relevant

If you recall Instagram originally launched their Stories feature in response to the popularity of the social media platform Snapchat. At the time Snapchat had caused a significant decline in daily usage of users on IG. Luckily, IG stories was a hit and still dominates much of the social media consumption, especially for Millennials. That is until recent months as TikTok has ravaged the US social media scene.

“In a new area in the Instagram app, Reels allows users to create and post short, 15-second videos set to music or other audio, similar to TikTok. Also like TikTok, Reels offers a set of editing tools — like a countdown timer and tools to adjust the video’s speed, for example — that aim to make it easier to record creative content. Instagram, however, doesn’t have the same sort of two-tabbed, scrollable feed, like TikTok offers today.” Tech Crunch.

We are excited to see if Reels lives up to our expectations. With the constant controversy TikTok faces in the U.S., we would love to see something that provides the creative freedom and execution of TikTok without the controversial ties and uncertainty of authenticity and longevity when planning for our social media clients.
